Beginning in the spring semester of 2019, the University of Texas at Austin will offer women the opportunity to compete in beach volleyball, an Olympic sport that is experiencing rapid expansion.

According to the President of the University of Texas at Austin, Jay Hartzell, “We are excited to have Beach Volleyball join the nation’s top athletic program and be a part of our winning Longhorn tradition.”

“The combination of indoor and beach volleyball will provide greater competitive opportunities for our student-athletes, increase our ability to attract top talent, and deliver even more compelling sporting events for our fans and community,” according to the statement. “The combination of indoor and beach volleyball”

In 2009, the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) recognized beach volleyball as a viable option for women to pursue in the role of a varsity sport during the spring semester.

It held its first ever National Championship in 2016, having played its first official season during the 2011-12 academic year. Before becoming a fully sanctioned intercollegiate sport for the 2024 season, the Longhorns will pursue a limited spring schedule in 2023 under the direction of Jerritt Elliott and the current Indoor Volleyball staff. After that, the sport will become available to all students beginning with the 2024 season.

According to Chris Del Conte, the Vice President of the University of Tennessee and the Athletics Director, “We have been discussing this for some time, and we are thrilled to be adding this fast-paced and exciting sport to our athletics programs.”

We consistently have one of the best volleyball programs in the country, and we believe that the addition of beach volleyball will enable us to continue to strengthen our position as a leader in the sport. Coach Elliott and our volleyball team will benefit tremendously from the year-round competition in a sport that draws some of the best student-athletes in the country.

In addition, our athletics program as a whole will see improvements as a result of this addition. We are excited to get things rolling this spring, and we anticipate a sustained level of success in this sport throughout the years to come.

The Longhorns have traditionally been considered to have one of the best indoor volleyball programs in the United States. They have won a total of 27 all-time conference titles in addition to three national championships. Elliott, who is in his 22nd year as head coach of the team, has carried on that tradition throughout his tenure.

Over the course of the past 16 seasons, he has guided the team to a total of 16 consecutive NCAA Sweet 16s, 15 NCAA Regional Finals, 10 Final Fours, and five National Championship matches. This accomplishment places him in first place in the nation. The Horns have been victorious in 10 of the last 11 Big 12 Championships, in addition to their NCAA championship win in 2012.

Elliott referred to this as “another great opportunity to build and expand our brand of University of Texas Volleyball” as he stated his excitement about the upcoming season. “Having it along with our indoor team will be a great addition to our program in so many different ways, and we are very excited about this opportunity.”

Spring competition and beach volleyball will bring increased exposure to our sport, which will improve our ability to recruit top-tier talent and provide us with the chance to recruit even more exceptional student-athletes. In the years to come, it will also make available some exciting volleyball competitions and events, in addition to providing additional opportunities for training. On top of that, it’s a really fun and entertaining sport, which means I’m confident that our fans will have a great time coming out to watch it.”

Beach Volleyball will be added to the group of 20 intercollegiate programs that have helped University of Texas win back-to-back LEARFIELD Directors’ Cup titles as the top overall athletics program in the country over the course of the past two seasons. The previous year for Texas was filled with success, as evidenced by the university’s four National Championships and six NCAA runner-up finishes. 10 of its 20 varsity sports finished in the top two of their respective NCAA divisions, 12 finished among the top five, and 14 finished in the top ten.
