OKBet Volley: Retamar is NU -Sta Elena Leader

Joshua Retamar was praised by the head coach of National University-Sta. Elena’s men’s basketball team, Dante Alinsunurin, for finally accepting the leadership role on the team.

At the time, Retamar was just 19 years old when the previous season of the Spikers’ Turf took place, making him one of the youngest players in the league.

After three years and a pandemic have passed, the product of Perpetual Help Bian has now emerged as the rock for the Nationals in the ongoing 2022 Open Conference. This individual has even led the collegiate squad to a sweep of the semis, which has propelled them to finals.

“Masaya ako sa nagiging resulta ng laro niya. Alinsunurin made these comments after Sta. Elena-NU defeated VNS-One Alicia in the semifinals on Tuesday. “Even though in the beginning we had some difficulty communicating with him, he handled himself very well as a captain of the ball and as a setter who was stationed at the back of the court,” Alinsunurin said.

“Itong semis, ‘di lang semis actually nung mga last two games namin sa elimination lumabas talaga yung pagka-leader niya sa loob. Nakita natin sobrang tahimik lang niyan, pero sa ibang bagay naman niya ginagawa. Sobrang masaya ako kasi nakita na niya kung (gaano) siya ka-importante sa loob ng court,” he continued.

The Nationals won their match against the Griffins in four sets, 25-17, 20-25, 25-21, and 27-25, thanks in large part to the efforts of Retamar, who orchestrated the offense for his team and delivered 28 outstanding sets. This victory allowed the Nationals to advance to the finals without dropping a single set.

For his part, the standout player on the Philippine men’s national volleyball team said that he was just pleased to see all that they had worked so hard for finally come to fruition.

“Masaya po kasi yung pinagtrabahuhan namin everyday is hindi nasasayang and lumalabas siya sa court kapag naglalaro kami,” added Retamar. “Syempre mais todo pa sa training para pagdating sa game madali na lang maglaro.”

On Thursday evening at 5:30, Retamar and the Nationals will compete against the Cignal HD Spikers in the championship match of the Open Conference.
