Beach volleyball will make its debut at the Olympics for the eighth time in Paris 2024. The sport made its first appearance at the Olympics in Atlanta in 1996.

The United States of America and Brazil have historically been regarded as the game’s two most dominant nations. While the United States of America already have seven gold medals in their history, Brazil will be looking for redemption after missing out on the podium at the Olympic Games for the first time ever at the Tokyo 2020 games.

All of the beach volleyball competitions for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games will take place at the iconic Champs de Mars, in the Eiffel Tower Stadium, which will be temporarily constructed for the occasion.

What are the requirements to qualify for the beach volleyball tournament in Paris 2024?

The same number of teams will compete in Tokyo 2022 as they did in 2020. France, as the country that will be hosting the tournaments, is entitled to one quota for both the men’s and women’s competitions.

The remaining 23 quotas for each gender will qualify for Paris 2024 through one of three qualification routes, with a cap of four quotas per national Olympic committee (two for each gender), in order to uphold the universal participation principle. These qualification routes are as follows:

  1. The two winning teams (one male team and one female team) of the Beach Volleyball World Championships in 2023 will each receive an automatic qualification for the Paris 2024 tournament.
  2. The top 17 teams (per gender) in the FIVB Olympic Ranking will qualify for the Olympics. This ranking will take into account the 12 best performances that a pair has achieved between the dates of January 1, 2023 and June 10, 2024. The following competitions can be used to determine ranking results: Beach Pro Tour (Elite, Challenge, Future, and Finals), FIVB Senior World Championships for Men and Women, and recognized Continental Tours Finals all take place in 2023.
  3. The remaining five quotas for each gender will be distributed across the five Continental Olympic Tournaments; this will ensure that the winning pairs receive a spot in the Olympics. Between the 13th and the 23rd of June in 2024, the culmination of these five events will take place.

When will it start, where will it be held, and what will the format be for the beach volleyball competition in Paris 2024?

In contrast to volleyball, the tournament format for beach volleyball at the Paris 2024 Olympics will be identical to that which was used in Tokyo 2020. As part of the Olympic competition, there will be a total of 24 teams competing in a total of six round-robin pools. After that, the top 16 pairs will advance to the single-elimination knockout phase, where there will be quarterfinals, semifinals, and bronze and gold medal matches.

The Eiffel Tower Stadium, located close to the Champ de Mars, will play host to the beach volleyball competition for the Paris 2024 games between the dates of 27 July and 10 August.

Watch out for these beach volleyball teams and athletes at the Paris 2024 Olympics

After Anders Mol, then 24 years old, and Christian Sorum, then 25 years old, made history by winning gold at the Tokyo 2020 tournament, Norway will undoubtedly be among the favorites to win the beach volleyball tournament that will be held in Paris in 2024. The Norwegian pair, with experience and youth working in their favor, appears to be the most formidable contender for a medal at the upcoming Olympic Games.

The most recent FIVB ranking, on the other hand, places Brazilian pairs at the top of the leaderboard in both the men’s and women’s categories. This ranking places several Brazilian pairs within the top 10 of their respective rankings, including Andre Stein and George Wanderley in the men’s ranking, Renato and Vitor Felipe in the women’s ranking, Barbara and Carol in the women’s ranking, and Duda and Ana Patricia in the men’s ranking.

The veteran American athlete April Ross and her partner Alix Klineman won the women’s competition at the most recent Olympics, taking home the gold thanks to a near-flawless performance. On their way to the Olympic title, they lost only one set in the course of their journey. Despite this, the Australian team is another one to keep an eye on because Taliqua Clancy and Mariafe Artacho del Pilar won silver at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics for their country.

When the competition starts in Paris, we can be sure that the Olympic Ranking will include pairs from other NOCs that are known to perform well on the sand, such as the Netherlands, Poland, Italy, and Germany. We can also be sure that these pairs will be in contention for the Olympic Ranking.
