CHATTANOOGA – The Chattanooga Mocs volleyball team, which swept the first weekend of Southern Conference play last weekend, will play its first away league matches of the season at Mercer on Friday and Samford on Saturday. The Mocs hope to maintain their winning streak and keep moving in the right direction.
The game against Mercer is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. Eastern Time (ET) on Friday, while the game against Birmingham is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m. ET on Saturday. The only match at Samford that will be televised LIVE on ESPN+ is the one on Saturday. Both matches currently have live statistics available.
Last weekend, Chattanooga (7-9, 2-0 SoCon) defeated South Carolina rivals Furman and Wofford in in seven sets to open off play in the conference. On Friday, the Mocs won a close contest against the Paladins by a score of 3-1, and then on Saturday, they dominated the preseason favorite Terriers by a score of 3-0.

Samford evened its Southern Conference record at 1-1 by sweeping UNCG in Greensboro to move its overall record to 6-8. This victory came after Samford suffered its first loss of the season on the road at Western Carolina by a score of 3-1. The Bulldogs have the most kills per set (13.19), assists per set (12.02), and aces per set compared to the other teams in the league (1.96). Under the direction of head coach Keylor Chan, Samford won the Southern Conference Tournament and qualified for the NCAA Tournament in 2020-21, 2019, 2018, and 2016 respectively.
WEEKEND RECAP
On Friday, Chattanooga (7-9, 2-0 SoCon) defeated Furman 3-1, then on Saturday, they defeated preseason favorite Wofford 3-0, both games taking place within Chattanooga’s own Maclellan Gymnasium. Chattanooga’s record now stands at 2-0 in the conference. The Chattanooga Moccasins are one of three Southern Conference teams to start the season undefeated.
TYSON SURPASSES 1K MARK
During Friday’s victory over Furman by a score of 3-1, outside hitter Natalie Tyson, who transferred from East Carolina to Furman, racked up her 1,000th career kill with her 22nd of the match. Tyson finished his career with 786 kills at East Carolina University (where he played for four years) before passing the 1,000-kill mark when playing for the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. This season, Tyson has posted 12 matches with 10 or more kills, including three with 20 or more kills, and he is currently leading the SoCon in overall kills with 223.
