OKBet Volley: AVC Rondina-Pons reach Seniors’ Last 16

Thursday at Roi-Et, Thailand, the Asian Volleyball Confederation (AVC) Senior Women’s Beach Volleyball Championship was held.

Both of the Philippine women’s teams competed in the tournament, and both of them advanced to the Round of 16.

Sisi Rondina and Bernadeth Pons gave Taliqua Clancy and Mariafe Artacho del Solar of Australia 1 a fright before succumbing to a 16-21, 17-21 defeat. The duo enjoyed the experience of competing against silver medalists at the Tokyo Olympics, but ultimately fell short of their goal.

During the second set, Rondina and Pons gave the Australians everything they could take, to the point that Clancy and Artacho del Solar were forced to call a timeout. The top-ranked team in the competition, however, was able to pull ahead and win, putting an end to the Philippines’ chances of advancing to the quarterfinals.

After advancing through the pool stage of the AVC Beach Tour Roi-Et Open a week ago, Rondina and Pons made it to the round of 16 for the second week in a row at the event they were competing in.

After failing to make the cut in the Roi-Et Open, Dij Rodriguez and Gen Eslapor were able to go to the round of 16 this time, however they were eliminated by Thailand 1’s Worapeerachayakorn Kongphopsarutawadee and Taravadee Naraphornrapat in two sets. The scores were 7-21 and 14-21.

Rondina and Pons finished their time in Pool D with a record of 2-1, which was good enough for second place. They finished their run by defeating Thailand 3’s Wornatchayakorn Phirachatakrailert and Charanrutwadee Patcharamainaruebhorn in three sets (21-15, 15-21, 15-7), as well as New Zealand 3’s Maya Dickson and Katie Sadlier in two sets (21-11, 21-8). Their lone defeat came at the hands of Lin Meimei and Xia Xinyi of China 1, who won by scores of 10-21 and 11-21.

The lone victory for Rodriguez and Eslapor came at the hands of Australia 3’s Alisha Stevens and Georgia Johnson, 21-19, 21-13; however, the score was sufficient for Rodriguez and Eslapor to finish second in Pool G and earn a spot in the Round of 16.

Their two defeats were in the form of five-game matches; the first was to Japan 2’s Akiko Hasegawa and Yurika Sakaguchi; they were defeated 16-21, 24-22, 12-15. The second defeat came at the hands of Hong Kong 2’s To Wingtung and Wong Manching; they were defeated 21-16, 18-21, 13-15.

The Philippine National Volleyball Federation AVC supported the participation of the national women’s beach volleyball teams in the continental competition, which lasted for three days and featured the involvement of thirty-two different pairs of players.
